Mazurek Discusses Password Problems with IMI TechTalk

Michelle Mazurek, an assistant professor of computer science with joint appointments in the Maryland Cybersecurity Center and the Human-Computer Interaction Lab, was recently featured on IMI TechTalk to discuss password security.

She says falling victim to a phishing attempt or reusing passwords put people most at risk for getting their passwords stolen. With phishing, she says the strength of a password does not matter if you fall victim to an attempt. However, users can protect themselves by never reusing passwords on important accounts.

Mazurek also notes that attackers study password trends, such as users’ tendency to put digits and special characters at the end of their passwords.
