Workshop on Cryptography and Hardware Security for the Internet of Things

Thursday, October 8, 2015

College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center
gangqu@umd.edu

The primary goal of this workshop is to identify and address both the short-term and long-term challenges related to the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications with focus on security and privacy issues and whether they can be addressed by the newly proposed lightweight cryptography and hardware security solutions. Another goal is to boost the collaboration between researchers and industry around the world on the field of IoT and security.

The subject areas will cover a wide range of cyber information related technical communities for the general IoT applications. We are particularly interested in emerging challenges from various IoT domains that include, but not limited to, smart grids, medical devices, cybervehicles and smart transportation systems. In such domains, in addition to the numerous applications and opportunities come with the IoT, security and privacy also become a serious concern, mainly due to the fact that modern computational intensive cryptograph cannot be implemented on these extremely resource constrained devices.

Among the key problems that will be discussed are:

  • Has the current research on hardware security and lightweight cryptography provided adequate theoretical solutions and practical tools for the security and privacy related problems in IoT domain?
  • What are the new challenges IoT applications bring to the research community and industry of hardware security and lightweight cryptography?
  • What are the threat/attack models and scenarios for generic, domain specific, and cross domain IoT applications?
  • How to measure the consequences of security breach and privacy leak, as well as the level of success of their countermeasures?
  • What are the roles of cryptography and hardware security in the management and standardization of IoT devices?
